Instructions

For this assignment you are asked to choose a home (apartment, house, condo, etc) to inspect for safety hazards. It can be your own home, but ensure there is enough to inspect to make this assignment a worthwhile learning experience for you.

There are two parts of the inspection. Part 1 is information about the home itself. Part 2 is about specific safety hazards that you find around the home.

Part 1: Home Information

The first part is to find out information about the home itself. Please find out the following information and record it on your own. You will need this information to answer on the response page. Each answer is worth 1 point.

  1. Approximate age of the home:

  2. Style of the home: (two-story, one floor condo, etc.

  3. Number of persons living in the home

  4. Ages of the persons living in the home

  5. Number of working fire extinguishers present in the home

  6. Number of smoke detectors present in the home

  7. Number of working carbon dioxide detectors present in the home

  8. Is the heating source: Electrical, gas or hot water (registers)?

  9. Is the stove/oven Gas or electric?

  10. Is there a first aid kit in the home?

Part 2: Spotting safety hazards

For part 2, you are asked to complete a thorough inspection of each room of the home (incl. basement, laundry room and garage) and find 10 safety hazards.

Safety hazards can be:

  • Physical Hazards: shoes in entryways, hanging wires, items stacked poorly, scattered toys, blind cords hanging low, etc.

  • Thermal Hazards: related to hot items such as water temperature, stoves, curling irons, etc.

  • Mechanical Hazards: broken items, missing hand rails, etc.

  • Bio-Hazardous Hazards: razors, open garbage, insulin syringes, etc.

For each safety hazard that you find, please record the following information:

  • What room is this hazard in?

    • ex. Living Room

  • What is the Hazard?

    • ex. Area rug moves

  • What age group does it affect the most?

    • ex. Toddlers, adults and seniors because of decrease in ability to balance

  • What measure would improve safety?

    • ex. Purchase an anti-slip rug, remove the area rug, add carpet tape to bottom of rug
